Ranger Suarez, Phillies shut out Rockies

Ranger Suarez pitched effectively into the seventh inning, Bryce Harper and Max Kepler had RBI doubles, and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Colorado Rockies 2-0 in Denver on Thursday.

Suarez (3-0) gave up six hits and struck out six before leaving after walking Ezequiel Tovar with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.

Orion Kerkering retired Hunter Goodman on one pitch to strand runners on first and third. Jordan Romano pitched the ninth for his sixth save for the Phillies, who have won seven straight, including four over the Rockies.

Brenton Doyle, Jordan Beck and Tovar had two hits each for Colorado, which has dropped five straight and fell to 8-42 on the season despite a strong outing from starter German Marquez. He allowed two runs — one earned — on four hits with two walks and five strikeouts in seven innings.

It was a rare pitching duel at Coors Field and came after Philadelphia outscored the Rockies 25-12 in the first three games of the series.

It was Suarez’s third straight quality start in his four outings this season and the second time he didn’t allow a run.

Marquez was equally effective but was victimized by an unearned run in the fourth inning.

Bryson Stott reached on a fielding error by Tovar at shortstop, stole second and scored on Harper’s double to left.

The Phillies extended their lead in the seventh when Kyle Schwarber led off with a walk and scored on Kepler’s one-out double into the right-field corner.

The Rockies had traffic against Suarez but couldn’t cash in. Doyle had a one-out triple in the second inning, but Tyler Freeman grounded out to short and Kyle Farmer flew out to strand Doyle.

Beck and Tovar hit consecutive two-out singles in the third inning, but Goodman was caught looking to end the threat.

Philadelphia squandered chances, too. Schwarber led off the second with a single but was doubled up after Beck made a leaping catch on Nick Castellanos’ drive to left field. Alec Bohm doubled with one out in the fifth but was also doubled up when Brandon Marsh lined out to shortstop.
