Dodgers’ bats wake up late, blast Marlins

Shohei Ohtani tripled to awaken a slumbering Dodgers offense as Los Angeles defeated the host Miami Marlins 10-1 on Wednesday afternoon.

With one out and the game scoreless in the top of the sixth inning, Ohtani scorched a 107-mph liner into the gap in right-center. He then scored from third on Freddie Freeman’s single.

The Dodgers then scored six runs — including a bases-loaded triple by Freeman — in the seventh when they batted around, and their pitchers did the rest.

Landon Knack (2-0), making just his fourth appearance of the season and his first since April 15, pitched five scoreless innings to earn the win. He had a 7.27 ERA entering Wednesday, but he silenced the Marlins on four hits and one walk, striking out five and lowering his ERA to 4.61.

Marlins starter Valente Bellozo was brilliant, holding the reigning World Series champions scoreless for 5 1/3 innings on just one hit and two walks. He also struck out seven batters, leaving with a no-decision.

Cade Gibson (0-1), making just his second major league appearance, gave up Ohtani’s triple and Freeman’s RBI single, and that was enough to get the loss.

The Dodgers extended their lead in the seventh against reliever Lake Bachar.

James Outman (walk) and Enrique Hernandez (single) started the one-out rally. Hyeseong Kim followed with an RBI single. The Marlins then intentionally walked Ohtani with two outs, and Mookie Betts earned an RBI base on balls.

Freeman’s triple made it 6-0, and Andy Pages added an RBI single.

The Dodgers made it 10-0 in the ninth on Outman’s three-run homer.

A highlight for the Marlins — other than Bellozo’s pitching — was a throw by rookie catcher Agustin Ramirez, who caught Ohtani trying to steal second base in the first inning. It was the first runner caught stealing in Ramirez’s young career.

Ohtani, however, has scored 10 runs against the Marlins this season. That’s the most by any player against any team so far in 2025.

Up next, the Dodgers will travel to Arizona to play the Diamondbacks on Thursday night to open a four-game series.

Miami is off until Friday, when the Marlins will visit the Chicago White Sox to start a three-game set, which is followed by three against the host Chicago Cubs.
