Garrett Mitchell’s bat remained scorching hot as the Milwaukee center fielder went 4-for-5 with four RBIs, helping the host Brewers break a record Saturday as they defeated the Cincinnati Reds 13-9.
Combined with their 20-0 pummeling of the Reds on Friday, the 33 runs over two games set a new all-time high for the Brewers (93-56), surpassing the 32 they scored on July 8 and 11, 1990.
Saturday was a night for hitters in Milwaukee, with the roof open at American Family Field and the wind blowing out to center, and both teams reaped the benefits. However, the Brewers broke a 5-5 game open with eight straight runs through the fourth and fifth innings to extend their winning streak to five.
Mitchell, who went 3-for-5 with a grand slam Friday, got all four hits in the first five innings, with a two-run homer, his 11th of the season, in the first, and a two-run double that capped a five-run fifth. Cooper Pratt doubled while going 3-for-5, while Brice Turang (2-for-4) and William Contreras also homered in the win.
Juan Brito (3-for-4) hit his second home run and drove in three for the Reds (69-79), who lost their fifth straight. Eugenio Suarez hit his 23rd home run as part of a 3-for-4 night with three runs scored and two RBIs, and JJ Bleday broke an 0-for-20 streak with a 2-for-5 performance that included two runs scored and an RBI.
Elly De La Cruz had a pair of doubles, going 2-for-5, and drove in a run for the Reds. Jake Bauers (1-for-4) also drove in two for the Brewers.
Chad Patrick (9-4) struck out four in 1 1/3 innings while allowing just a hit, relieving Brewers starter Shane Drohan, who could not keep a 4-0 lead and allowed five runs on five hits in 3 2/3 innings.
Brady Singer (6-14) tied a career-worst by giving up eight runs over four innings. The Reds starter gave up Turang’s 19th homer, a two-run shot, and Mitchell’s blast as the Brewers led 4-0 after the first inning.
After the Reds tied the game in the top of the fourth, Singer gave up a three-run shot to Contreras, his 17th of the season.
