Tigers hit three homers in win over Rangers

Robbie Grossman, Zack Short and Akil Baddoo homered and the host Detroit Tigers extended their winning streak to a season-best six games by defeating the slumping Texas Rangers 4-2 on Wednesday.

Grossman’s homer was his career-best 15th of the season. Harold Castro contributed two hits and a run scored.

The long balls supported rookie Matt Manning (2-3), who pitched six strong innings after being recalled from Triple-A Toledo. Manning gave up two runs, one earned, on four hits in six innings. He recorded four strikeouts while throwing 77 pitches.

Joe Jimenez, Jose Cisnero and Gregory Soto each pitched a scoreless inning of relief, with Soto notching his 10th save.

Texas starter Jordan Lyles (5-7) gave up four runs on six hits in seven innings with five strikeouts. John Hicks and David Dahl drove in the runs for the Rangers, who have lost eight consecutive games. Texas has been outscored 59-10 during the slide.

Detroit can sweep the four-game series with a victory on Thursday afternoon.

For the second straight game, Grossman hit a two-out solo homer in the first inning to give Detroit the lead.

Texas tied the game in the second when Joey Gallo singled and Hicks brought him home with a double to left-center.

The Tigers regained the advantage in the bottom of the inning when Castro singled and Short pulled a hanging slider over the left-field wall for his fourth home run.

The Rangers cut Detroit’s lead to 3-2 in the fourth. Adolis Garcia drew a walk, advanced on a passed ball and scored on Dahl’s two-out double.

Baddoo pushed the Tigers’ advantage to two runs with his solo blast in the fifth over the right-field fence. The rookie has eight homers.

The Rangers got a threat going with two out in the ninth. Pinch-hitter Andy Ibanez slapped a bloop single to right and Eli White was hit by a pitch. Soto committed a balk to put both runners in scoring position but then induced Charlie Culberson to ground out to complete Detroit’s victory.
