Reports: Bears DC to retire, but head coach and GM to stay

The Chicago Bears reportedly are getting one off-field change but aren’t engaging in a major overhaul.

Defensive coordinator Chuck Pagano is retiring, but head coach Matt Nagy and general manager Ryan Pace will remain in their jobs, multiple media outlets reported Tuesday night.

The Bears, who went 8-8 in the regular season, were eliminated from the playoffs with a 21-9 road loss to the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.

Pagano, 60, headed the Chicago defense the past two seasons. The Bears ranked 11th in total defense in 2020 after placing eighth in that category in 2019. Chicago yielded 23.1 points per game this season, which ranked 14th in the NFL, after the club was fourth in 2019, when it yielded 18.6 points per game.

Pagano was the Indianapolis Colts’ head coach from 2012-17, compiling a 53-43 regular-season record and a 3-3 playoff mark. He led the Colts to the AFC Championship Game after the 2014 season.

He missed much of the 2012 season while undergoing treatment for leukemia.

Nagy and Pace came under scrutiny as the Bears slumped to the end of the 2020 season. Chicago started 5-1 but lost its next six games. A three-game winning streak followed, but the Bears were blown out by the Green Bay Packers in the regular-season finale and wound up sneaking into the postseason thanks to other results.

Nagy, 42, was selected as the NFL Coach of the Year after his first season on the job, when he led the 2018 Bears to a 12-4 mark. A pair of 8-8 seasons have followed. He has yet to win a playoff game in two appearances.

Pace, 43, took over the Bears front office in 2015. Chicago owns a 42-54 regular-season record and an 0-2 playoff mark during his tenure.
