Report: Patriots back at facility after positive test Friday

The New England Patriots returned to their facility on Saturday morning, one day after canceling practice when a player tested positive for COVID-19, ESPN reported.

The team abruptly called off practice Friday and shut down the facility after a positive test and later placed center James Ferentz on the rserve/COVID-19 list. The Patriots reportedly are waiting on confirmation of a second positive test within the organization.

The Patriots (2-2) are scheduled to host the Denver Broncos (1-3) on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET in Foxborough, Mass.

That game already has been rescheduled twice following earlier positive tests within the Patriots organization, including quarterback Cam Newton and cornerback Stephon Gilmore. Both players returned to practice on Thursday.

The game originally was set for Sunday, Oct. 11, and then pushed back to Monday, Oct. 12, before ultimately being postponed to this Sunday. Both teams took a bye week instead last weekend.

Broncos coach Vic Fangio said Friday that his team expects to travel to New England on Saturday.

“We’re under the assumption and understanding that this game is going to go off on time,” Fangio said. “Anything that happens otherwise will happen when it happens.”

Ferentz, 31, made his 2020 debut in Week 4 at Kansas City, playing all 75 offensive snaps in a 26-10 loss. He was a full participant in Thursday’s practice.

Ferentz is in his third season with the Patriots following two seasons with the Denver Broncos (2015-16) and one with the Houston Texans (2014).
