Phillies’ Joe Girardi, Jean Segura squabble in dugout

Philadelphia Phillies manager Joe Girardi and second baseman Jean Segura exchanged heated words in the dugout in the second inning of Sunday’s 10-8 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays in Dunedin, Fla.

Girardi has been vocal in criticizing his team’s defensive lapses this season, including on Saturday night, when the Phillies made three errors and had other misplays that were not ruled as errors.

After that game, the manager said, “Catch the ball. Just catch the ball. That’s all we need to do. I don’t know what that is. They work every day. They do their stuff. It has to be they’re just not following the ball into their glove, miscommunication. It shouldn’t happen at this level.”

Segura made one of those errors on Saturday, and then another in the bottom of the first inning on Sunday, extending a lengthy inning that saw the Jays hit solo home runs and threaten for more.

In the top of the second, television images showed a coach and at least one player getting between Segura and Girardi after they exchanged words.

In the bottom of the second, when Girardi went to the mound to remove starting pitcher Chase Anderson, who gave up seven runs in 1 1/3 innings, Segura was the only infielder who didn’t join the meeting.

Segura made another error in the seventh inning on Sunday, giving him six for the season in 27 games.

The Phillies have a fielding percentage of .986, placing them in the upper tier of the majors, according to ESPN. In 41 games, they have made 21 errors, ninth-fewest in the majors.

Girardi made clear after Sunday’s game that he wasn’t going to discuss the incident with Segura with the media.

“That’s a bench conversation, meant for the bench,” Girardi said on more than one occasion.

When another reporter tried to follow up, the manager replied, “You can ask all you want, you got everything you’re going to get about it. Alright, I’m done with it. I know you’re doing your job, but that’s it.”

The Phillies are 21-20, one-half game out of first place in the NL East.
