Packers QB Jordan Love proclaims he’ll be ready to start opener

Jordan Love is under the microscope with reigning MVP Aaron Rodgers withholding his services from the Green Bay Packers.

It remains unclear if Rodgers will relent and rejoin the team he has played with for the past 16 seasons.

But if Rodgers stays away, Love says he will be ready to start the regular-season opener against the New Orleans Saints on Sept. 12.

“A hundred percent,” Love told reporters on Wednesday. “Obviously, this is a time where I’m getting a lot of extremely valuable reps that I might not have been getting in a normal circumstance. So I’m just going to take it day by day. … But yeah, that’s what I’m here for. I was drafted here to play quarterback, so I’ll definitely be ready Week 1.”

Love was selected in the first round of the 2020 NFL draft by Green Bay, a move that didn’t sit well with Rodgers.

Rodgers wanted offensive help that could contribute right away and definitely wasn’t expecting the team to select his potential replacement.

Rodgers seemed motivated by the situation and had a stellar season that included a career-best 48 touchdown passes along with 4,299 yards and just five interceptions, helping the Packers reach the NFC title game and earning his third league MVP award.

But he made it clear in his postgame press conference following that title game loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers that there were issues and the situation had only worsened despite upper management making attempts to patch things up.

That puts Love in a situation in which his every throw at the three-day minicamp is being scrutinized.

Media accounts say Love performed significantly better Wednesday than he did one day earlier, when he struggled with his accuracy.

“It was a good day for me and everybody else as well, just bouncing back from yesterday’s practice on offense, you know, it wasn’t our best practice all-around,” Love said. “Bouncing back meant a lot for everybody.”

Days like Wednesday are important for Love, who has never played in a game for the Packers since the 2020 preseason was scrapped due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“I definitely think good days build confidence, and just stacking good days on top of each other,” Love said.

Green Bay coach Matt LaFleur is looking for Love to find an even keel between the good days and bad days.

“Listen, you can never get too high and never too low in this game,” Packers coach Matt LaFleur said after practice. “One of the biggest emphases for Jordan is just to treat each play as its own entity. We’re always grading the decision-making, the timing, the accuracy, and we want to see the consistency just continue to get better and better.”

Love showed promise in 2018 at Utah State when he passed for 3,567 yards, 32 touchdowns and just six interceptions.

But he took a major step backwards the following season by passing for 3,402 yards, 20 touchdowns and an FBS-worst 17 interceptions.
