Orioles reconfigure Camden Yards to reduce homers

The Baltimore Orioles are moving the fence back 30 feet in left field at Camden Yards to help reduce home runs.

The height of the wall will also be raised another 5 feet.

“While Oriole Park will remain a hitter’s ballpark, it will no longer be an outlier among the parks,” read an email sent by the team to fans whose seats will be affected by new layout.

In 2021, the Orioles hit 122 home runs at home and 73 on the road. Baltimore pitchers allowed 155 longballs at home, compared to 103 on the road.

“For the start of the 2022 season, the distance from home plate to the left field wall will be pushed back as much as 30 feet, in varying increments at different points in the wall, and the height will raise approximately 5 feet,” read the email. “By pushing back the left field wall, we’ve created a playing field that is fair for both pitchers and hitters.”

The previous dimensions at Camden Yards, which opened in 1992, were 333 feet to left field and 364 to left-center, and the height of the fence was 7 feet.
