Amazon pulling Redskins merchandise from site

Amazon said Wednesday it will remove Washington Redskins merchandise for sale while the team considers a name change.

CNBC reported that sellers on the website were given 48 hours to remove Redskins products.

Amazon is the latest retail giant to take this step, joining Walmart, Target, Nike and others.

The team announced Friday it “will undergo a thorough review of the team’s name” amid renewed pressure during a nationwide surge of support for issues of social justice and racial equality.

FedEx, which holds the naming rights to the team’s stadium through 2025, stepped up the pressure by requesting a name change last week.

The club’s internal discussions are ongoing, but the potential new name and mascot will “have no Native American imagery,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Wednesday.

The franchise began using the Redskins nickname in 1933, when it was based in Boston and previously called the Braves. Team owner George Preston Marshall moved the club to Washington in 1937.
