Corbin Carroll homered, tripled and drove in four runs and the Arizona Diamondbacks survived a late Detroit rally to spoil Justin Verlander’s return to the Tigers with a 9-6 victory in Phoenix on Monday.
Carroll tripled in a run in the first inning and hit a three-run homer in the second for a quick 5-0 lead off Verlander, who was making his first start with the Tigers since 2017 after signing a one-year contract in the offseason.
Verlander (0-1) gave up six hits and five runs in 3 2/3 innings. He spent his first 13 seasons in Detroit, where he won the American League Cy Young Award in 2011.
Michael Soroka (1-0) tossed five scoreless innings and tied his career high with 10 strikeouts in his first start for Arizona, which won its home opener after being swept in a season-opening three-game series by the Dodgers. He pitched an “immaculate inning” in the fifth, striking out the side on nine pitches. Paul Sewald pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his first save.
White Sox 9, Marlins 4
Miguel Vargas blasted a grand slam and drove in six runs, Austin Hays slugged a three-run homer, and Chicago earned its first win of the season, beating host Miami.
Munetaka Murakami, the first player ever to homer in his first three games with the White Sox, went 1-for-5, but his home run streak ended. Chicago bounced back after losing three straight. Davis Martin (1-0) allowed five hits and three runs in five innings.
The Marlins took their first loss after a three-game season-opening sweep. Miami was led by Liam Hicks, who hit a two-run homer and added an RBI single. Chris Paddack (0-1) made his Marlins debut, allowing eight hits and eight runs in four innings.
Rockies 14, Blue Jays 5
Troy Johnston hit a two-run homer to ignite a seven-run sixth inning as visiting Colorado defeated Toronto for its first win in four games this season.
Ezequiel Tovar had three hits and three RBIs and TJ Rumfield added three hits and two RBIs for the Rockies. Braxton Fulford added a solo homer and a run-scoring single. Reliever Chase Dollander (1-0) allowed four runs, five hits and two walks with five strikeouts over four innings for the win.
Davis Schneider hit a two-run homer while George Springer, Andres Gimenez and Kazuma Okamoto added solo shots in the Blue Jays’ first loss in four games this campaign. Toronto starter Cody Ponce hurt his right knee while trying to field Jake McCarthy’s grounder in the third inning and was carted off the field.
Astros 8, Red Sox 1
Jose Altuve slugged two home runs and Lance McCullers Jr. carried a shutout bid into the seventh inning of his season debut as Houston downed visiting Boston.
Yordan Alvarez and Brice Matthews added home runs for the Astros, who won their third straight game after dropping the opening two. Altuve posted his 15th multi-homer game and finished 4-for-4 with a walk and four runs. McCullers (1-0) allowed one run on four hits with nine strikeouts over seven innings.
The Astros pounced on Ranger Suarez (0-1) in his Boston debut. The left-hander surrendered four runs on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings.
Mariners 2, Yankees 1
Cal Raleigh’s walk-off single in the ninth inning gave Seattle a victory against visiting New York.
Mariners reliever Matt Brash (1-0) pitched a scoreless inning for the victory. Luis Castillo tossed six shutout innings, fanning seven, as Seattle improved to 3-2.
Ryan Weathers went 4 1/3 innings and allowed one run on four hits in his Yankees debut. New York took its first loss after winning three straight.
Reds 2, Pirates 0
Chase Burns tossed five one-hit innings against Pittsburgh and struck out seven, and host Cincinnati plated a pair of runs to give him his first major league victory.
Burns (1-0) threw 78 pitches and walked three. Connor Phillips worked around two walks in the ninth inning for his first career save. Spencer Steer hit a fourth-inning sacrifice fly, and Will Benson followed with an RBI triple.
Pirates starter Braxton Ashcraft (0-1) tossed six innings of two-run ball.
Nationals 13, Phillies 2
Luis Garcia Jr. drove in three runs and Jose Tena notched three hits and two RBIs, guiding visiting Washington to a comfortable win over Philadelphia.
Joey Wiemer, who went 3-for-3 with a home run and a walk in each of his first two games for the Nationals, finished 2-for-4 with a walk. Foster Griffin (1-0), in his first big-league appearance since 2022, gave up two runs in five innings.
Rafael Marchan hit a two-run homer for the Phillies. Taijuan Walker (0-1) was charged with seven runs, six earned, and 10 hits in 4 2/3 innings.
Royals 3, Twins 1
Kris Bubic (1-0) allowed two hits and one run over six innings, Kyle Isbel clubbed a two-run home run and Kansas City won its home opener, defeating Minnesota.
Relievers Daniel Lynch IV, Nick Mears and John Schreiber (first save) combined to throw three scoreless innings. Isaac Collins added a solo homer for the Royals.
Matt Wallner homered for the Twins. Simeon Woods Richardson (0-1) gave up two runs on five hits over five innings.
Braves 4, Athletics 0
Bryce Elder threw six scoreless innings and Mauricio Dubon drove in three runs to help Atlanta keep the visiting Athletics winless.
Elder (1-0) allowed five hits and one walk, struck out five and picked off a batter. Braves pitchers have allowed only six runs through their first four games, logging two shutouts.
Jacob Lopez (0-1) permitted three runs on five hits and five walks in four innings as the Athletics fell to 0-4.
Cubs 7, Angels 2
Edward Cabrera pitched six innings of one-hit ball and Ian Happ homered for the third straight game to lift Chicago over visiting Los Angeles.
Carson Kelly and Moises Ballesteros both contributed two-run singles for the Cubs. Cabrera (1-0) made a scoreless club debut, and Colin Rea followed with three innings of two-run ball for a save.
Ryan Johnson (0-1) surrendered six runs and seven hits in 3 1/3 innings as the Angels took their third loss in a row. Yoan Moncada homered and Nolan Schanuel had two hits.
Rangers 5, Orioles 2
Jack Leiter struck out eight in six solid innings and Jake Burger drove in two runs as Texas won at Baltimore.
Leiter (1-0) allowed two runs on five hits. Jakob Junis, Jalen Beeks and Tyler Alexander (second save) completed a combined seven-hitter for the Rangers, who have won three straight since a season-opening loss at Philadelphia.
Gunnar Henderson hit a solo home run and a run-scoring single to provide both of the Orioles’ runs. Chris Bassitt (0-1), making his Orioles debut, allowed four runs in 4 1/3 innings.
Rays 3, Brewers 2
Nick Fortes doubled home the go-ahead run in the ninth inning to give visiting Tampa Bay a comeback victory over Milwaukee.
The Rays’ Jonny DeLuca, who tied it 2-2 with a leadoff homer in the seventh, drew a two-out walk off Trevor Megill (0-1) in the ninth. Fortes followed with an RBI double to the gap in right-center.
Garrett Cleavinger (1-1) tossed a scoreless eighth inning for the win. Milwaukee lost for the first time in four games this season. Tampa Bay won its second straight after beginning 0-2.
Mets 4, Cardinals 2
Bo Bichette, who was 1-for-14 on the season entering the day, had a pair of RBIs as visiting New York beat St. Louis.
Jorge Polanco and rookie Carson Benge each had two hits for the Mets. Clay Holmes (1-0) allowed two runs on four hits over 5 2/3 innings, and Devin Williams earned his first save for the Mets with a 1-2-3 ninth.
Alec Burleson was the lone player with two hits for the Cardinals, and he drove in a run. Nolan Gorman belted his second homer of the season. Kyle Leahy (0-1) allowed four runs on eight hits in a career-high five-plus innings.
Giants 3, Padres 2
Harrison Bader homered and Landen Roupp pitched six scoreless innings as visiting San Francisco gave manager Tony Vitello his first major league win.
Roupp (1-0) allowed only two hits and two walks while striking out seven. Three relievers got the last nine outs, with Ryan Walker pitching the ninth for the save.
Walker Buehler (0-1) absorbed the loss in his first start for San Diego, permitting five hits and three runs over four innings. The Padres have scored just nine runs in their first four games, three of them losses.
Guardians 4, Dodgers 2
Parker Messick threw six scoreless innings and visiting Cleveland handed two-time defending champion Los Angeles its first loss of the season.
Steven Kwan had an RBI double and a run and Daniel Schneemann added a two-run double as the Guardians won the opener of a three-game series after splitting four games at Seattle to begin the season. Messick (1-0) gave up five hits with no walks and five strikeouts.
Los Angeles’ Roki Sasaki (0-1) allowed one run on four hits over four-plus innings. Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman drove in ninth-inning runs for the Dodgers.
