Garrett Crochet struck out 11 in seven innings and the Boston Red Sox easily extended their winning streak over the host New York Yankees to eight games in a 12-1 rout on Saturday afternoon.
Crochet (14-5) allowed only Giancarlo Stanton’s 445th career homer amongst five hits and improved to 10-1 over his past 14 outings. He finished with his sixth double-digit strikeout game this season and 12th career.
Crochet also reached 200 strikeouts this season after fanning Aaron Judge in the third inning. He recorded his 500th career strikeout by fanning Jose Caballero in the seventh.
Trevor Story continued to hit well against the Yankees this season by homering and driving in three runs.
Story belted a two-run double off New York rookie Will Warren (7-6) and added a homer to reach 20 for the first time since 2021. He finished with three hits and is batting .351 (13-for-37) against the Yankees this season
Rookie Roman Anthony and Alex Bregman added sacrifice flies for the Red Sox, who are outscoring the Yankees 48-22 during their winning streak.
Anthony also doubled in the eighth and scored on a single by Jarren Duran while Nathaniel Lowe and Ceddanne Rafaela contributed an RBI singles in the eighth.
Lowe scored Boston’s ninth run when New York shortstop Anthony Volpe committed a throwing error on an infield single by David Hamilton. Carlos Narvaez hit a two-run homer after Rafaela scored on a balk by Paul Blackburn.
The Red Sox won their third straight and moved 1 1/2 games ahead of the Yankees in the race for the American League’s top wild-card spot after clinching the head-to-head tiebreaker in Friday’s 1-0 win.
The Yankees struck out 13 times and lost their third straight after winning eight of their previous 11.
The Red Sox loaded the bases in the third on two singles and a walk to Alex Bregman and took a 2-0 lead when Story doubled to left field. Boston loaded the bases in the fourth when Warren plunked Carlos Narvaez and went up 4-0 on deep fly balls by rookie and Bregman.
Warren allowed five runs on seven hits in four-plus innings. He struck out three, walked three and exited after Story homered.
