Kyle Schwarber doubled, homered and had five RBIs, while leadoff man Trea Turner had five of Philadelphia’s 20 hits as the Phillies defeated the visiting Seattle Mariners 11-2 on Wednesday afternoon to complete a three-game sweep.
Phillies starter Jesus Luzardo (12-6) allowed one run on three hits over six innings. The left-hander didn’t walk a batter and struck out 12 as the National League East-leading Phillies won for the fifth time in their past six games.
Turner finished 5-for-6 with a triple, three runs and two RBIs while Schwarber, who bats second, and Nos. 8 and 9 hitters Max Kepler and Bryson Stott each went 3-for-5. Schwarber now leads the majors with 109 RBIs.
Julio Rodriguez and Eugenio Suarez hit solo shots for the Mariners, who lost their fifth game in a row and went 2-7 on their nine-game trip.
Nationals 5, Mets 4
Josh Bell homered and drove in two runs as host Washington ended New York’s three-game winning streak.
Dylan Crews contributed an RBI double and two runs while Drew Millas added an RBI triple. Starter Brad Lord (4-6) allowed seven hits and four runs over 5 1/3 innings. Four Nats relievers combined to allow one hit and one walk over the final 3 2/3 innings.
Brett Baty cracked a solo homer while Jeff McNeil drove in two runs for the Mets. Kodai Senga (7-5) gave up six hits and five runs (four earned) in five-plus innings.
Pirates 2, Blue Jays 1
Johan Oviedo struck out six batters over five innings and combined with three relievers on a three-hitter, leading host Pittsburgh over Toronto. Oviedo (1-0) picked up his first win since Sept. 21, 2023, while making his second start of this season after coming back from Tommy John surgery. Dennis Santana retired the side in the ninth inning to record his ninth save.
Oviedo allowed a lead-off home run to George Springer, his 21st homer of the season. Pittsburgh answered immediately with a two-out rally in the bottom of the first, as Tommy Pham doubled in a pair off Jays starter Chris Bassitt (11-7).
Bo Bichette had two of Toronto’s three hits. Pham was the only Pirate to amass a pair of hits and an extra-base hit in an eight-hit attack.
Tigers 7, Astros 2
Dillon Dingler’s RBI triple highlighted a six-run first inning as host Detroit completed a three-game series sweep of Houston.
Dingler also doubled and scored two runs for the AL Central leaders, and Javier Baez contributed two hits and two RBIs. Charlie Morton (9-10) allowed two runs on three hits and three walks while striking out eight in six innings. Brenan Hanifee, Tyler Holton and Rafael Montero combined for three innings of scoreless relief. The Tigers have won nine of their last 11 games.
Mauricio Dubon’s two-run homer in the fourth inning ended the Astros’ 31-inning scoreless drought, but that was all Houston could muster. Houston starter Framber Valdez (11-7) was charged with all seven Detroit runs, giving up seven hits and four walks in five innings. Center fielder Taylor Trammell left the game in the first inning after crashing into the wall.
Diamondbacks 3, Guardians 2 (10 innings)
Adrian Del Castillo singled in the winning run in the 10th inning after Lourdes Gurriel Jr. homered to tie the game in the ninth, as Arizona beat Cleveland in Phoenix.
Messick, recalled before the game from Triple-A Columbus, gave up one run in 6 2/3 innings in his major league debut and was in line for the victory until Gurriel’s 424-foot homer off Cade Smith leading off the ninth.
Marlins 6, Cardinals 2
Sandy Alcantara pitched seven strong innings against the franchise that signed him as host Miami defeated St. Louis.
Alcantara (7-11), who signed with the Cardinals out of the Dominican Republic at age 17, allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits and one walk while registering a season-high nine strikeouts. It was one of the few times this year Alcantara (6.04 ERA) has lived up to his Cy Young Award form of 2022. Perhaps all Alcantara needed was to face his old team. In eight career starts against St. Louis, Alcantara owns a 1.66 ERA.
Marlins rookie shortstop Maximo Acosta — who had been hitless in his first eight MLB at-bats — broke that streak with a 418-foot homer to center in the sixth. Heriberto Hernandez, another Marlins rookie, went 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Miami’s Joey Wiemer made his first start of the season in right field and, in the first inning, robbed Ivan Herrera of extra bases with a running catch on the warning track.
Braves 1, White Sox 0
Rookie Hurston Waldrep fired a career-best seven scoreless innings as host Atlanta beat Chicago in the rubber game of a three-game interleague series. The game was the complete opposite of the first two games in the series, when the teams combined for 43 runs and 58 hits. Both teams had four hits Wednesday.
Waldrep (4-0) allowed four hits, one walk and matched his career high with seven strikeouts. The Braves’ former No. 7 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, lowered his ERA to 0.73 with 24 strikeouts in 24 2/3 innings. The Atlanta bullpen finished the job, as Pierce Johnson pitched a scoreless eighth inning and closer Raisel Iglesias worked a perfect ninth inning to earn his 21st save. The Braves have won seven of their last eight games.
Atlanta scored its only run in the fourth inning on a fielding error by White Sox shortstop Colson Montgomery that allowed Marcell Ozuna to score. Chicago starter Martin Perez (1-3) was the hard-luck loser, throwing 5 1/3 innings and allowing one unearned run on three hits. The White Sox have lost six of their last seven games.
