Edward Cabrera combined with three relievers on a three-hitter as the Miami Marlins beat the Los Angeles Angels 3-0 on Sunday to win the three-game series in Anaheim, Calif.
Cabrera (1-1) allowed three hits with two walks and struck out a season-high 10 batters over 5 2/3 innings. Anthony Bender and Calvin Faucher each pitched a scoreless inning before Ronny Henriquez retired the Angels in order in the ninth for his first major league save.
Los Angeles fanned 15 times and was shut out for the first time since April 27. The Angels had their eight-game winning streak snapped in a 6-2 loss on Saturday.
Javier Sanoja had two hits and drove in a run for the Marlins, who won their fifth series of the season.
Miami took a 1-0 lead against Kyle Hendricks (2-6) when Matt Mervis and Derek Hill began the third inning with back-to-back doubles. Sanoja followed with a sacrifice fly to score Mervis from third.
The Marlins tacked on another run in the fourth inning. Otto Lopez hit a leadoff single, stole second base and scored on Connor Norby’s two-out single.
Sanoja doubled with one out in the fifth and scored on Jesus Sanchez’s double to put the Marlins ahead 3-0.
Hendricks was denied in his bid for his 100th career victory after giving up three runs on seven hits over six innings. He struck out five and did not allow a walk.
The Angels put two runners on with two outs in the sixth inning when Nolan Schanuel and Yoan Moncada drew back-to-back walks. After Bender replaced Cabrera on the mound, both runners advanced before Taylor Ward struck out.
Ward went 0-for-4 and had his franchise-record streak of 10 consecutive games with an extra-base hit come to an end.
Cabrera turned in his first scoreless start of the season and lowered his ERA to 2.53 ERA in four outings this month.
The Angels had a team-record seven-game stretch of hitting multiple home runs end on Saturday and were held to one extra-base hit in the series finale on Travis d’Arnaud’s ground-rule double with two outs in the second inning. He was stranded on Luis Rengifo’s groundout.
